Winter markets and cozy spots ❄️

This is an archived Island Edition newsletter originally published on . Links were accurate at publication time and may no longer work.

Yesterday was Giving Tuesday, so everyone may be tapped out, but I have launched a donation page for anyone who might want to throw a few dollars toward Island Edition. The page includes a breakdown of the newsletter’s monthly expenses to show exactly where your money would go. Another way you can help support this project is by telling your friends and family about it. Word-of-mouth is powerful on PEI, so if you’re enjoying this newsletter each week, please tell people about it.

And with that shameless plug out of the way, let’s get to today’s issue of Island Edition.

⌚Approximate reading time is 5 minutes.

IN THIS ISSUE

  • Province finds buyer for New Leaf Essentials
  • First look (maybe) at PEI’s digital driver’s license

  • Christmas event roundup - Santa’s heading to Summerside

QUICK HITS

🍂 New Leaf on Life: The province has sold the former New Leaf Essentials grain processing facility in Slemon Park to ADDiCAN Inc., a manufacturer and supplier of nutritional products for animals. New Leaf Essentials went into receivership in 2021, leaving the province on the hook for $4M in unpaid loans and seeing ten people left without a job. The land sale was approved by an Order in Council dated Sept. 13, 2022. It seems the province actually turned a profit on this one; documents show the property was purchased by ADDiCAN for $4.2M.

🏙️ Sky High: Stratford residents have until noon today to submit feedback on a proposal that will create two new planning zones: Urban Core (permits 12-storey buildings) and Core Mixed-Use (permits six-storey buildings). The proposal was sparked by the Gray Group, owner of Concord Properties, which wants to be the first to utilize the proposed zoning on 200 acres of land it owns between Mason Road and Mackinnon Drive. Gray Group presented a concept plan to residents at a town meeting last week. No development agreement will be signed prior to the rezoning, meaning Gray Group will not be bound to its concept plan and will be able, as-of-right, to develop the land within the context of those zones (12-storey, six-storey) with little, if any, oversight from council.

🎗️ 2023 Easter Seals : "Believe in yourself and don't give up." That is the motto of Ten-year-old twin sisters Katelyn and Meghan Rogers, the 2023 Easter Seals ambassadors. The Grade 5 students from Cornwall’s Eliot River School will tour the Island in April to share that motto in an effort to raise money to support Islanders living with disabilities.

👮 Fence Theft: Someone made off with 11 eight-foot fence panels from Canadas Best Value Hotel at 20 Capital Drive sometime Monday night. Charlottetown Police have released an image of the fence panels, and say that (obviously) someone would have needed a large vehicle or a trailer to haul the panels away. Anyone with information is asked to contact police or Crime Stoppers. Similar fence panels are sold at Home Depot for about $100.

Province looking at digital driver's licenses, again

The Department of Transportation is revisiting the idea of introducing a digital driver's license to Islanders. Discussions with the third-party company contracted to supply driver’s licenses to the province have recently restarted after being halted due to the pandemic. The province says it’s too early to say exactly how PEI’s digital license could work, but did confirm the contract it has with the third-party company does include an option for digital licensing.

The Company: PEI signed a contract in 2017 with Gemalto Canada Inc. to supply driver’s licenses for the province. Gemalto was acquired by France-based Thales Group in 2019.

Digital Driver’s License: Thales Group says a digital driver’s license is a version of your physical driver's license that is stored on your smartphone. It is not a replacement for the actual card, rather a supplement to it.

My Speculation: Although the province could not confirm how PEI’s eventual digital driver’s license would work, Thales Group does provide quite a bit of information on its website showing off its digital license product. Because the province has a contract with this company, I feel it’s safe to assume that PEI's digital license will resemble what's outlined in this PDF.

App for That: Islanders who were hoping that their driver’s license would one day live within their Apple or Google wallets shouldn’t hold their breath; Thales Group developed its own digital wallet app which needs to be installed on a user’s smartphone, rather than using the wallet ecosystem built into smartphone operating systems. 👎

For the nerds: If you want to do a deep dive on Thales Group’s digital license platform, this website has a lot of information and highlights different use case scenarios.

BY THE NUMBERS

PEI Shellfish

📈 57%: PEI produced 57 per cent of the total farmed shellfish products in Canada in 2021, and increased its production by 40 per cent compared to 2020. All that shellfish weighed in around 24,300 tonnes.

⚖️ 17k: PEI mussel farmers harvested 17,025 tonnes of mussels in 2021. To give that number some perspective, approximately 1,500 school buses would weigh in at 17,000 tonnes. That’s a lot of mussels!

💰 $54.7: All that shellfish yielded sales of just over $54.7M, making 2021 a record year for PEI’s aquaculture sector in terms of dollars earned.
