QUICK HITS | | ⛺ Kicking the Can: Charlottetown council voted Tuesday on a motion to send an application for an emergency homeless shelter back to the planning board, effectively delaying an approval until November. Last week I reported on a planning board resolution recommending council approve two modular housing units on Park Street containing 50 overnight beds. Before council had a chance to vote on the planning board’s recommendation, Coun. Terry MacLeod, who represents Park Street, put forward a motion to defer the vote, saying area residents were not properly notified. The motion to defer passed. 🎥 Link to the recording where council discussed the deferral. | | 🏢 Run for Office: If you’ve ever wanted to represent your community on a municipal council, now’s your chance. Elections PEI will administer the election process for Charlottetown, Cornwall, Stratford, Summerside and Three Rivers. Elections PEI has a candidate information page available where the paperwork can be downloaded. All paperwork and a $100 deposit (Stratford does not require a deposit) must be returned to Elections PEI by 2:00 PM on Friday, Oct. 21. Municipal elections will be held on Nov. 7. | | ⛽ Heating Oil Spikes: The cost to heat a home with oil took a big jump overnight after an unscheduled price adjustment. The maximum price for furnace oil is now 187.5 cpl, up 20 cpl; diesel is 237.1 cpl, up 18 cpl; and 179.6 cpl for gas, up 3 cpl. | | 📄 Help Wanted: The province is offering to cover travel and accommodation expenses for people who are willing to come to the Island to help contractors make repairs to buildings damaged by Hurricane Fiona. In partnership with the Construction Association of PEI, Islanders who need repairs can register to be matched with a qualified contractor. Check out this news release for more details and contact information. |

FIRE PREVENTION WEEK | "Fire Won't Wait. Plan Your Escape"
| | | | Imagine if you woke up to the smell of smoke, its source unknown. What would your first instinct be? What if your escape down the stairway was blocked by heat and smoke, what would you do? How would you get your family, pets included, out of the house?
These are questions that fire departments across the province are asking Islanders to think about during fire prevention week, which kicked off on Sunday. This year’s theme, ‘fire won’t wait, plan your escape,’ is a call to action to be better prepared. Below are some resources to help you get started. |

BY THE NUMBERS | | 🖥️ 50,313: As of Tuesday, the Red Cross had registered 50,313 Island households for the $250 Fiona relief payment being covered by PEI taxpayers. These households represent 97,986 residents – about 57 per cent of the Island’s population. | | ⛑️ 35,118: Of the total households registered with the Red Cross for the Fiona relief payment, 28,118 households have received their payment, with another 7,000 approved and awaiting payment to be issued. That leaves 30 per cent of the registrations as pending, which helps explain the long lineups people are experiencing at the two temporary Red Cross locations. | | 🚌 92,000: September was another record-breaking month for transit ridership in Charlottetown. Trius Transit moved just over 92,000 people during the month of September, up from 84,000 riders in August. September also marked 17 years of service for the transit system. |
