WASTE WATCH

Superior Sanitation, Greenisle acquired by Ontario-based GFL Environmental Services

Out with the dark blue, in with the lime green – GFL Environmental has started rebranding some of the company’s acquired assets in Charlottetown. (Island Edition Photo)

Superior Sanitation and Greenisle Environmental have been sold to a fast growing waste management company rooted in Ontario, but with operations throughout North America.

GFL Environmental’s expansion into Prince Edward Island marks a milestone for the company’s portfolio which had operations in every province except Prince Edward Island. It also operates in several US states.

Details of the sale have not yet been made public, and GFL has yet to issue a formal announcement. The company has started recruiting for some management positions on the Island, as well as positions for drivers.

Island Waste Management Corporation (IWMC) does not anticipate that Islanders will notice any change in regular residential or commercial services.

Superior Sanitation began operations in 1964 with three garbage trucks, and grew over the decades to become the largest waste collection company on the Island. In 1999 the company became a major contractor to IWMC when the provincial government created the waste watch program.

QUICK HITS

Squeaky Wheel: The roundabout at Vogue Optical in Sherwood will include an active transportation trail after all. Members of Bike Friendly Communities met with city hall staff Wednesday where the two found common ground in replacing the planned sidewalk with a one-way 1.5 metre-wide shared path for both pedestrians and cyclists.

Phone Scams: Charlottetown Police are warning of an increase in scam phone calls from fraudsters claiming to be relatives in need of money to post bail. Police will never call anyone looking for bail money. If you receive this type of call, police say you should hang up, and report the call to the Anti-Fraud Centre at 1-888-495-8501.

Jet Setters: A new seasonal non-stop flight between Charlottetown and Edmonton launched Thursday. Swoop will operate the twice weekly flight on Sundays and Thursdays until mid-September. The service will then be reduced to once per week until the end of October.

Wednesday’s issue of Island Edition reported that more than 5,000 soon-to-be displaced patients would be added to the patient registry. Health PEI has not confirmed exactly where these patients will end up when three Charlottetown family doctors close their offices, and says attempts are being made to have some of them added to a medical home.
