Island events heating up again 🔥

Maybe I’ve been hiding under a rock, but have you heard about Moonlight Bazaar? I just learned about it this morning; it’s a free street festival that’s taking place on Victoria Row this Saturday that aims to fuse music, food, art, and live performances beneath the glow of a massive 7-meter inflatable Moon and Mars. It sounds bazaar, alright…bazaar enough that I have to check it out. It starts at 5 and runs until midnight.

But before you head to Victoria Row, join Lt.-Gov. Antoinette Perry and guests at noon this Saturday as a new oak tree is planted at Beaconsfield to replace one that fell during Fiona - more info here.

When did Charlottetown get so cool? 😎 Let’s get to today’s issue of Island Edition.

QUICK HITS

🩺 PEI to Host Health Ministers: Health ministers from across Canada, including the federal health minister, are set to meet in Charlottetown next month, Village Media’s The Trillium has confirmed. Federal Health Minister Mark Holland's office told Village Media that the meeting, scheduled for Oct. 11 and 12, aims to prepare the healthcare system for the future and promote collective action on long-standing healthcare issues. This will be PEI Health Minister Mark McLane’s first meeting with all of his provincial and federal counterparts at one table since taking over the health portfolio in April.

👀 Mock Search: No need to worry if you spot PEI's Ground Search and Rescue team in Victoria West this Saturday. The team will be up west to conduct a mock search as part of their training to enhance members’ search and incident management skills, and to qualify new team leaders. Folks in the area should be aware of increased traffic leading up to the mock search at 4:00 p.m., which could last into the evening.

📈 Rent Increase: Island tenants will be digging a little deeper next year to cover their rent. Landlords have been given the nod to raise rents by up to three per cent as of January 1, but will need to give tenants at least a three months notice. However, if landlords believe they need more, they can apply for an additional three per cent, for a maximum increase of six per cent.

Note: Renting PEI, a service provided by Community Legal Information Prince Edward Island, breaks down PEI’s complex rental rules, a useful resource for both tenants and landlords.

📢 SHOUT-OUTS

🌳 To the City of Charlottetown and its collaborating partners, including local watershed groups, for planting over 2,000 trees throughout the city over the last year.

🗳️ To Brian Poirier on his successful run to be Alberton’s next mayor. Poirier garnered 137 votes, followed by Rosetta Tremblay with 118 votes, and Chester Adams with 68 votes. The great news here is that three people ran in the byelection and over 300 residents voted.

🥇 To the lively one, The Eastern Graphic, for being named one of Canada’s best all-round newspapers in the 2023 Canadian Community Newspaper Awards.

Do you agree that Charlottetown poses well for nighttime aerial photos? Shijin Lal captured this shot with his new drone as tropical storm Lee approached the region. Aerial photography being added to Shijin’s collection of excellent photography is welcome news; follow along @shijin_lals.
