QUICK HITS | | 🚲 Pathway milestone: Work will soon get started on the last leg of the active transportation pathway project along Charlottetown's arterial highway. City council awarded a $418,000 tender to Landmark Construction to complete the section between Brackley Point Road to the Confederation Trail near Mount Edward Road. Phase 1, from Murchison Lane (Queen Elizabeth Hospital) to St. Peters Road, opened in 2021, followed by phase 2 from St. Peters Road to Brackley Point Road last summer. When complete, the total cost of the project should come in at around $3.85M for approximately 5.5 kilometers of pathway. | | ⚠️ Province creates Major Incident Readiness Team: The province has created a Major Incident Readiness Team (MIRT) to prepare for emergencies that have the potential to impact the Island. The team, made up of government ministers and senior management, will work with the PEI Emergency Measures Organization, government departments and municipalities to help prepare for major events. Safety Minister Bloyce Thompson described the MIRT as another branch for the Emergency Measures Organization to use, and that the team will serve in a decision making capacity to ensure departments have everything they need to be prepared and respond to emergencies. Related Guide: How to be Prepared for an Emergency | | 🚫 To mow or not to mow: Discussions are taking place at city hall to introduce an exemption to allow naturalized lawns in Charlottetown. The Dangerous, Hazardous and Unsightly Premises Bylaw requires that grass be kept at a height of 150 mm or less, just shy of six inches. Staff with the city’s environment and sustainability department presented a report to their standing committee on the topic. The report suggests an amendment to the bylaw could establish a formal process for landowners to request exemptions to create so-called "no-mow spaces," areas planted with native pollinator-friendly plants. The committee seems supportive of the idea and has forwarded it to the protective and emergency services committee for further discussion. | | 🚓 Stabbing at North Port: A 19-year-old Alberton man faces assault causing bodily harm charges after a youth was stabbed at North Port Wharf last Friday. West Prince RCMP say they found a youth with knife injuries when responding to a report of a stabbing at a party. The injured youth, not in life-threatening condition, was treated and released from hospital. The accused was released under strict conditions and is scheduled to appear in Summerside Provincial Court this morning (Wednesday). |
