QUICK HITS | | 🌲 Stratford Waterfront Gathering Space: A waterfront park in Stratford has long been talked about. With the lagoon now a distant memory, the town is wasting no time to implement its masterplan (PDF) for the Michael Thomas Waterfront Park. Work is expected to begin next month on a waterfront gathering and event space, which includes a boardwalk that will follow the existing Trans Canada Trail from the foot of the Hillsborough Bridge to the Michael Thomas statue 360 meters away. In addition to benches and lighting, the boardwalk will feature three lookouts that will extend over the riverbank and a small performance platform. Budgeted at $1.9M, the project will also see a new deck constructed around the Michael Thomas statue. Work is expected to wrap up before winter. | | 🔨 Nuisance Bylaw Status Quo: Construction workers in Charlottetown will need to continue keeping quiet until 7 a.m. The Construction Association of PEI sought an amendment to the city's nuisance bylaw, which currently curbs excessive noise from 9 p.m. to 7 a.m. The association aimed to shift the start of construction work to 6 a.m. The matter was discussed by the protective and emergency services committee last month and referred to the police service for review. It appears Charlottetown's bylaw is consistent with neighboring Stratford and Cornwall, as well as Moncton and Saint John. Given this alignment with other communities, the committee opted not to pursue the idea further. | | 🚧 Police Schedule Meeting to Discuss Neighbourhood Safety: Charlottetown Police have scheduled a town hall meeting for next month to address safety concerns in the neighborhoods surrounding the provincial outreach center on Euston Street and the emergency shelter on Park Street. Residents will have an opportunity to share their concerns and to learn how police plan to address “upcoming challenges”. The meeting will focus solely on policing matters. No information will be available regarding the province’s announcement last month that overdose prevention services will be introduced at the Park Street emergency shelter. The meeting will take place at Birchwood Intermediate on Tuesday, Sept. 5 at 7:00 p.m. | | 🪵 Stump Removal Rebate Nears: Charlottetown council is expected to green-light a rebate program next week to assist residents with the cost of removing tree stumps. If approved, the program will offer a $250 rebate for costs under $999 and a $500 rebate for higher expenses. Residents would coordinate with a contractor then apply for the rebate after the work is complete. Only stumps with a minimum diameter of 30 cm (approximately one foot) would qualify. The city has been waiting to launch the program in anticipation that the province would match its allocated $250,000. With no commitment in place and fall soon approaching, the city will seek council’s approval to move ahead without provincial support. There’s no need to contact city hall just yet, the earliest the program will be approved is next Monday. |

While wrestling is not my thing, it’s great to see our provincial fair adding new activities to ensure it remains relevant. |

The hurricane season will peak on September 10, so it's a good idea to keep an open ear for possible impacts to our region. It’s too soon to say where it’ll land, but Tropical Storm Franklin could be something we’re talking about this time next week. I have this Canadian Hurricane Centre page bookmarked for quick reference. |
