Victoria Day weekend on PEI 🇨🇦

This is an archived Island Edition newsletter originally published on . Links were accurate at publication time and may no longer work.

Two weeks ago I told you about a proposed 464-unit residential development on Mount Edward Road. Last week I issued a correction that 542 units are planned. Today I am correcting last week’s correction. The developer was kind enough to email me last week to say I had the number right the first time – 464 units are proposed. The city’s planning report for this project incorrectly states 542 units.

Let's get to today's issue of Island Edition.

PS: Happy birthday, Dad! (tomorrow)🎂

⌚Approximate reading time is 3 minutes.

➡️ Starbucks (sort of) returning to Summerside

➡️ Cabbage cookbook sales help women’s shelter

➡️ Business Hall of Fame Gala is next week

QUICK HITS

🏠 Quashed Again: The Island Regulatory and Appeals Commission has overturned Charlottetown council's August 2021 rejection of an application for a minor and major variance on a Viceroy Avenue lot. In its decision, posted on May 15, IRAC found that the council of the day had failed to provide any reasons for the rejection, despite the application being supported by city planning staff. The variances were necessary to allow for the construction of two new single-detached dwellings.

🚔 Officer Assaulted: Prince District RCMP charged two men on May 10 after investigating a complaint about a car blocking a gas pump and making excessive noise at a local gas station. The officers apprehended the two men in the vehicle, leading to a confrontation where the driver hit an officer. Both individuals were arrested. During the arrest, police confiscated cash, drug paraphernalia, and methamphetamine pills.

BUSINESS BUZZ

📽️ New Sud in Town: Just in time for May long weekend, PEI Brewing Company has added a new beer to its Gahan label. Longshore American Pale Ale is available at the company’s taproom, all Gahan restaurant locations, and the Gahan Beer Store (Atlantic Superstore). Here’s a video of head brewer Chris Long talking about Longshore.

🛒 Half Caff, Extra Foam: After Starbucks’ seven-year hiatus from PEI’s western capital, fancy coffee fans in Summerside will soon be able to grab a cup of their favourite whatever from an in-store location at Atlantic Superstore. Jobs ads posted by Loblaws have been spotted online for Starbucks clerks in Summerside, but I couldn’t find anyone willing to officially spill the beans. Saltwire’s Kristin Gardiner got to the bottom of it this week, reporting that the location will open in June. A corporate-owned Starbucks store operated in Summerside from August 2014 to January 2016.

Have a tip or hear a rumour of a business opening or closing? Drop me a line, I’ll look into it.
