Winter updates & weekend fun

This is an archived Island Edition newsletter originally published on . Links were accurate at publication time and may no longer work.

See what happened? Last week I told you that I hadn’t had a chance to use our new snowblower due to this unseasonably warm winter. That wasn’t a complaint, just so we’re clear; but if you’re wondering, it runs like a dream! 👍

Let’s get to this week’s issue of Island Edition.

⌚Approximate reading time is 4 minutes.

IN THIS ISSUE

➡️ Wanted: new Legal Aid office

➡️ Ignition Fund Recipients

➡️ Parks Canada jobs

QUICK HITS

⚖️ New Legal Aid Office: The province is searching for a new office space to house legal aid and family aid services. A tender was posted on Jan. 14 for fit-up and a ten-year lease of a 4,000 sqft office space within walking distance of the Charlottetown courthouse. The current legal aid office is located on Great George Street. Opposition critics have been calling for an expansion to legal aid services for several years. Last March the province expanded legal aid services to help Islanders in non-criminal court matters, such as family law.

🥃 West Royalty Liquor: The province’s liquor commission has signed a ten-year lease renewal with Scott’s Real Estate Limited Partnership for the 2,000 sqft retail space that houses the West Royalty liquor store (next to Bed Bath and Beyond). The total value of the ten-year lease is just over $168,000.

🚒 Station 3 on Hold: Charlottetown’s third fire station is on hold. The Emergency and Protective Services Committee was given an update on the project (YouTube ~30 minutes), which dates back to a 2006 fire underwriters survey that recommended reviewing station locations. The Committee heard land purchased in 2017 for a station in West Royalty was supposed to be for a replacement of station 2 in Sherwood, and that no report has ever recommended a third station in the city. No timeline was given on when or if the project would continue, but the department would like to see a new underwriters survey completed before a decision is made.

BUSINESS

💸 2022 (Fall) Ignition Fund Recipients: Who’s up for a glass of cannabis-infused non-alcoholic wine? Maybe that’s not your thing. Well, how about a hard seltzer served in a container featuring graphics by local emerging artists? These are two products that were served a $25,000 Ignition Fund grant back in the fall. The province announced the five recipients (and their product offering) in a news release last week.

🚖 Hub City (Rideshare) Hero?: PEI-based Kari may be heading to the mainland. Company co-founder Len Currie told Huddle last week that the on-demand rideshare provider is considering expanding its service to New Brunswick, potentially as soon as this summer. Moncton updated its taxi bylaw last year to allow ridesharing, but so far no services have set up shop in the city. Speaking of the Ignition Fund, Kari received a startup grant from the fund back in 2020. The company now receives over 80,000 ride requests annually.

🦄 Not So Mythical: Sticking with the Ignition Fund theme, Pegasus Biotech announced a 1,000 sqft expansion this week to its Charlottetown laboratory. The company, founded by three scientists from the aqua research facility in Victoria that closed in 2019, also received an Ignition Fund grant in 2020. I don’t entirely understand what Pegasus does, but feel free to read the about page on their website if you’re the science-type.
