Welcome to 2023! I hope everyone had an opportunity to relax a little. 😴

With municipal elections in November and then a general slowing down in December before the holiday, gathering content for Island Edition has been a bit of a challenge. I’m looking forward to things picking back up.

It's a short issue today, so let’s get to it!

⌚Approximate reading time is 5 minutes.

IN THIS ISSUE

➡️ Inflation payments roll out this week

➡️ Things to look forward to (or not) in 2023

➡️ Beware of fake contractors

QUICK HITS

🏙️ Growth management: Urban sprawl and low density development is a money-losing proposition. Charlottetown’s downtown core occupies less than 5% of the overall footprint of the city, but generates 30% of the city’s tax revenue. This is one finding of a soon-to-be-released Growth Management Study that was commissioned by the Water and Sewer Utility. The report, which is largely a technical document the utility will use to plan infrastructure upgrades, will also be a vital planning document. It will offer growth scenarios the city can use to find efficiencies and balance between service delivery and return on investment. One way that could be achieved would be to develop growth nodes throughout the city – areas with denser development to help offset money-losing low density developments. The report is expected to be released to the public soon.

📈 Inflation support: Inflation support payments to more than 117,000 Islanders will begin rolling out tomorrow (Thursday). You can find all the details on this webpage.

⚠️ Fake contractor scams: Police are warning Islanders to be extra vigilant when hiring snow removal and roofing contractors. RCMP issued a news release over the holidays after receiving complaints from homeowners who claim they were scammed by fake contractors. The news release contains practical advice to follow when hiring a contractor. This release from RCMP follows complaints online from Islanders who have paid deposits by Interac e-Transfer to someone running a Facebook page claiming to be a roofing and snow removal contractor in eastern PEI. I emailed and phoned the would-be business a few times to verify its legitimacy, but heard nothing back.

💸 Supports for landlords: The province released details on how it will compensate landlords who were impacted by a government bill that froze residential rental increases at 0% for 2023. The program will lower land taxes landlords will need to pay in 2023, as well as offer some increased rebates for landlords who wish to make some energy efficiency improvements to their buildings. The idea is that by lowering tax obligations, landlords will be able to redirect that money toward operating costs that have increased over the last year. Full details are available in this news release.

2023 PREVIEW

Here are a few things we have to look forward to — or not — in 2023.

❎ Provincial Election: You can add an election to the old proverb that says nothing is certain but death and taxes. That is because PEI has a fixed election law that requires an election to be held every four years – the first Monday in October in the fourth calendar year following the most recent general election, to be exact. Right now the election is scheduled for October 2, but Premier Dennis King has the power to make a couple moves that would send us to the polls any time before that date, something pundits expect he will do this spring.

🥳 150 Celebration (again): You’re not alone if this one causes a little Déjà vu. This year PEI will celebrate 150 years since joining Canada, becoming the 8th province in 1873. Celebrating 150 years is something we recently did – twice, actually. In 2014 we celebrated 150 years since the Charlottetown Conference in 1864, the drunken party which eventually led to the formation of Canada in 1867. That formation, or Confederation, is what we celebrated in 2017 – Canada’s 150th birthday. So this year it’s our turn to celebrate, again.

🏅 Canada GamesIt’s no secret that PEI will host the 2023 Canada Winter Games. Maybe I’m talking to the wrong folks, but local knowledge of the event appears to be quite low. If you fall into that category, then here are the quick details: the games take place over two weeks from Feb. 18 to March 5. PEI will host 3,600 athletes who will compete across 20 different sports. Venues from tip-to-tip will be utilized, including two off-Island venues. Students will be happy to learn that schools will be closed during the games – here’s the school calendar.
