QUICK HITS | | 🤑 Subsidized Tolls: Canadian taxpayers will fork over $4.1M to Strait Crossing Bridge Limited for Confederation Bridge tolls to remain unchanged until at least 2024. Transport Canada made the announcement Monday, saying tolls were set to increase significantly – as much as $7 – in 2023. For perspective, the cost to cross has increased from $35 when the bridge opened in 1997 to the current toll of $50.25. When adjusted for inflation, that $35 from 1997 would be worth $59.42 today. | | 🪧 Trespass Notices: People staying at the encampment on the Charlottetown Event Grounds will soon be served trespass notices. During a special meeting of council Monday, Police Chief Brad Macconnell said his department, by request of the landowner, will begin issuing trespass notices to anyone on the property in the next couple of days. The chief’s comments followed an update from interim CAO Donna Waddell. She told council the city issued a compliance order to Charlottetown Area Development Corporation, the landowner, demanding that fire hazards on its property be corrected by Dec. 19. The province requested the city extend that order by two days, which the city agreed to if the province put a 24-hour fire watch on duty to monitor the site. The extension expires Thursday. | | 🚐 Vans for West Prince: Transportation West Inc., a non-profit organization that has been providing Islanders with affordable transportation options up west since 1999, has received funding to support the purchase of five fuel-efficient vehicles. The vehicles include one seven-passenger van, two 10-passenger vans, and two 14-passenger vans. Work will also include equipping the vehicles with wheelchair accessible ramps. Provincial and federal taxpayers will provide a combined $540,000 toward the $735,000 project. More info about Transportation West. |

ART | Island Artist Unlocks Hidden Beauty in Oyster Shells | | | | An unlikely audition led Tyne Valley’s Debbie Brady to focus her artistic attention toward something more famous than PEI’s fictional redhead. Debbie returned home from a walk along the shore with an oyster shell one day. With no expectations, she placed the shell under her macro photography lens and was immediately inspired by what she now calls Oyster Art.
The process begins with a trip to the shore. Less than ten per cent of shells hold the physical details required to create this unique art. Once a shell is selected, a series of extreme close-up photographs are snapped of a very small portion of the shell. These images are then digitally stitched together. The result is a piece of natural art full of patterns and vibrant colours. | | 📷 View Debbie's Oyster Art on her Instagram page | | Debbie designed and self-published a book this year that National Geographic recommends as a guide for traveling the Island through oysters. Oyster Art: The Book tells the story behind oysters featured from over 40 Island locations.
During our interview I called Debbie the queen of transferable skills. She laughed at first, but then conceded to my observation. She graduated from Dalhousie’s School of Nursing on full scholarship and worked as a nurse for a few years. After raising four children, she enrolled in Holland College’s graphic design program where she gained the skills, among other things, to layout a book and digitally impose her art in real world living environments. All these skills allow the entrepreneurial artist to manage all aspects of her work, from creating the art to marketing it for sale. Debbie’s work can be viewed and purchased via her website or in-person at her home-based gallery located at 795 Canada Road, Tyne Valley.
