First snowfall and festive lights ✨

This is an archived Island Edition newsletter originally published on . Links were accurate at publication time and may no longer work.

I’m ready to lean into the Christmas season and I’m dragging you with me. I’ll be including a weekly roundup of Christmas events that I find while I scour the web. Feel free to send me a quick note of any events you know about, especially events out in our rural communities.

With that out of the way, let’s get to this (very quick) issue of Island Edition.

⌚Approximate reading time is 3 minutes.

IN THIS ISSUE

  • Pizza Hut comeback
  • Another heat pump grant

  • Christmas event roundup

QUICK HITS

🍕 Pizza Hut Comeback: It seems the capital region will soon be home to two Pizza Hut Express locations. Rumours have been circulating about the chain’s comeback since the summer. Attempts to verify the rumour with Yum! Brands were unsuccessful, but Pizza Hut’s website is now listing a location in Charlottetown at 320 Capital Drive (the new Ultramar / Tim Horton’s at the Maypoint roundabout). Additionally, Kinlock Plaza-owner Crombie REIT is listing Pizza Hut Express as a tenant of the plaza (PDF) in its most recent property directory. Pizza Hut made a brief comeback five years ago in Charlottetown’s Kirkwood Mews Plaza, but the location quickly closed.

🥵 New (limited) heat pump grant: Ottawa announced a new heat pump program this week to help some homeowners get off oil. The Oil to Heat Pump Affordability (OHPA) Grant will provide up to $5,000 to eligible households to have a heat pump installed, upgrade required electrical services, and help with oil tank removal. This grant can be combined with other efficiency rebate programs. Eligibility is quite limited, however, because it’s based on Statistics Canada’s low income threshold which lumps the entire country into one category. Here’s a table showing the income threshold by household size. Applications will be available early in the new year.

🤑 Carbon Tax: If you need further convincing to make the switch from oil heat, Ottawa announced Tuesday (CBC) that it will impose the federal carbon tax on Islanders effective July 1, 2023. Up until now, PEI has negotiated its own carbon tax strategy with Ottawa which included exemptions on home heating oil and propane. The price of home heating oil will increase by 17.4 cents next July and propane will increase by 10 cents. To offset the tax, Ottawa will issue quarterly rebates to eligible households. For added context, the carbon tax on heating oil will increase the cost of an average tank by approximately $175.

📕 No One’s Fool: Last month I told readers about a 203-page book being released about former PEI politician Ron MacKinley – No One's Fool: Stories of a PEI Politician. Although the book has been on sale at Bookmark and on Amazon since last month, the official launch and signing takes place this evening (Nov. 23 / 7:00PM) at the Cornwall Library. Proceeds from the book will be donated to the Bluefield Family of Schools Breakfast Program. Co-authored by Sam MacPhail and Bill Hogg, the book features over 30 short stories from MacKinley’s time in office, and includes dozens of stylings from Island cartoonist Wayne Wright.

Note: Chris Hancock, along with four other readers, scrolled to the bottom of the October 19th issue and discovered an impromptu contest for a free copy of the book. Chris, you won! Reply to this email with your mailing address and I will get it sent out to you.

COMMUNITY CORNER

📚 The PEI Literacy Alliance and the PEI Public Library Service are accepting new or gently used books for children and teens. The books will be distributed to families through local food banks in Christmas hampers. Those wishing to donate to the Gift of Reading Campaign have until this Friday to bring a book to any PEI Library location.

Send a quick message if your organization would like to send out a quick PSA. There's no charge for these.
