Halloween on the Island 🎃

This is an archived Island Edition newsletter originally published on . Links were accurate at publication time and may no longer work.

Like all Islanders, my partner and I found ourselves in the dark following Fiona. We relied on our cell phones to keep us connected – barely. This morning, our Eastlink bill arrived showing that we used $3,333.98 worth of additional data 🤬. Thankfully Eastlink credited this amount back to us. And although that sounds like we used a lot of data, it was only 30GB. How do these companies continue to get away with ripping Canadians off like this?

Let me know if you and your family were taken advantage of during this post-Fiona period. Maybe there's a story worth telling here.

And with that little rant out of the way, let's get to today's issue of Island Edition.

⌚Approximate reading time is 4 minutes.

IN THIS ISSUE

  • Volunteer group fills gaps following Fiona
  • New website helps connect rural Islanders to services

  • Annual food drive taking place Saturday

QUICK HITS

🧭 PEI Community Navigators: A new website will help connect rural PEI residents and newcomers to a broad range of community services and resources. The PEI Community Navigator website, which was launched by CBDC, includes a helpful business and resource directory that allows a user to enter their address, then choose the type of service they require. The directory will display results based on travel time from the user’s address (super cool!). There are currently over 1,700 listings, and businesses are invited to self-submit their information to be included in the directory. This resource is also handy for people living in Charlottetown.

⛄ In Like a Lamb? We won’t be sipping brewskies on the beach, but for those of us who prefer a mild winter, AccuWeather released some good news last week. According to their Canadian winter forecast, our region will see above normal temperatures thanks to higher-than-normal Atlantic water temperatures and the orientation of the jet stream. The forecast, which should obviously be taken with a grain of salt, does go on to warn that the second half of our winter season could produce coastal storms and nor'easters.

COMMUNITY

Volunteer group fills gaps following Fiona

Few Islanders even knew this group existed while Hurricane Fiona was barrelling toward our Island. Back in the spring, a small group of volunteers organized a food drive to help keep the community fridge stocked. But it was the group’s response to the devastation Fiona left behind that introduced the name Charlottetown Mutual Aid into common conversations.

Three of the group’s core volunteers made a 45-minute presentation Monday to the PEI Legislature’s standing committee that is investigating the province’s response to the storm. The presentation highlighted some of the group's successes in reaching people who needed help, but it also highlighted gaps volunteers observed in government’s immediate response to the storm, providing financial aid to Islanders, and housing.

(Links above take you to slides in their presentation)

Since Fiona hit, the group was able to raise nearly $60,000 – $43,000 from community donations, and $15,000 through a grant provided by the United Way of PEI. Aside from monetary contributions, Islanders donated an estimated $60,000 worth of items.

To reach Islanders in need, the group launched a website where they received more than 300 requests for help. To reach even more people, volunteers hit the streets on a door knocking campaign that found more than 800 people needing assistance. Volunteers also served between 1,100 and 2,200 hot meals. In total, Charlottetown Mutual Aid has provided direct support to over 4,000 people since September 26.

Charlottetown Mutual Aid’s post-Fiona efforts are ongoing and support is still needed. The easiest way to reach the group is through their Twitter profile if you'd like to help out, request support, or make a donation.
