๐Ÿฅณ Island Edition is officially three months old.

Iโ€™m happy to have the Prince Edward Island Beer Festival as the first presenting sponsor of an Island Edition issue. I approached the organizers last week with an offer to promote their event in exchange for some free tickets to give away. A small win!

And with that out of the way, letโ€™s get to todayโ€™s issue.

PS: if you want two free tickets to Beer Fest, fill out this super short survey. Winner will be notified this Friday.

โŒšApproximate reading time is 4 minutes.

QUICK HITS

๐Ÿ‘‘ Long WeekendMonday, Sept. 19, has been declared a one-time statutory holiday. Provincial cabinet, following the lead of the federal government, met yesterday to make the declaration. The day is meant to commemorate Queen Elizabeth II, and will coincide with the day of her funeral. Public schools and government offices will be closed. The day will be treated like any other statutory holiday, meaning itโ€™s a paid holiday.

๐Ÿ“ƒ Dissolving Municipalities: The Rural Municipality of Darlington will be dissolved at the end of this year, reverting back to an unincorporated community. Darlington is not alone. The Rural Municipality of St. Louis is waiting for a decision on its proposal to dissolve, which was filed last November. And most recently, the Rural Municipality of Hampshire filed a proposal last month to also be dissolved. These municipalities, among others, have struggled to meet obligations set out under the new Municipal Government Act.

๐Ÿ…ฟ๏ธ Mobile Housing: The province plans to setup 40-50 trailers in the parking lot of the former government garage on Riverside Drive as part of its solution to help people facing homelessness. The plan, which was announced yesterday to CBC, was the topic of discussion Monday evening at a Charlottetown council meeting. Terry MacLeod, who represents the area, logged his objection to the plan before it was even formally announced. You can watch the discussion that unfolded during the council meeting here.

BUSINESS BEAT

Kari is catching on

Kari, a locally owned ridesharing service, is riding high after celebrating a large milestone this summer. The service announced that it completed 10,000 trips between June and August. Those trips helped 25,000 people reach their destination.

The service, which is essentially a made-in-PEI Uber, launched in December 2020. Their first milestone was reached five months after launching when they completed their first 1,000 trips.

Kari is available Island wide, but a ride must originate or complete in the Charlottetown area. The company has been expanding its service coverage since launching, and is now looking to partner with municipalities interested in providing door-to-door transportation services in underserved areas of the province.

To use Kari for your next trip, youโ€™ll first need to download the app to your smartphone. Kari is available on iOS and Android devices, and is available to download from both app stores.
