QUICK HITS

🎬 Quiet on the Set: Production of a comedy feature film directed by PEI’s Jeremy Larter kicked off this month. Who’s Yer Father follows a small-town private sleuth as he investigates the sale of black market lobster in Prince Edward Island, along with a scrappy convenience store owner. The movie is one of 29 projects to receive funding from Telefilm Canada.

📊 Latest Political Poll: Support for the PEI Progressive Conservative Party sits at 55 per cent, well ahead of the Green Party (22 per cent) and the Liberal Party (18 per cent). Satisfaction with the government is sitting at 79 per cent. These numbers were released yesterday by Narrative Research.

🚧 New Crosswalks: If you see crews along Upton Road in Charlottetown, they're installing three crosswalks at street access points on either side of the highway. The crosswalks will utilize flashing beacons to alert drivers of pedestrians. This stretch of roadway is used by upward of 25,000 cars each day.

LONG-TERM CARE

Non-unionized staff asked to come forward

The Standing Committee on Health and Social Development is examining staffing and working conditions at long-term care facilities on the Island, and is seeking feedback from non-unionized staff.

The Committee has already heard from unions representing employees from both public and private facilities. Statements made to the Committee will be kept confidential. The information will be used to make recommendations to the Legislative Assembly on how to make improvements to working conditions at the facilities.

Submissions are being accepted until Sept. 9th. If you know anyone who works in long-term care, it might be helpful to forward this email to them so they can share their experience.

🙋‍♂️ What is a Standing Committee? Good question. PEI’s Legislative Assembly has 27 elected members - we call them an MLA. Standing Committees are smaller groups made up of our elected members. These committees conduct detailed investigations and make recommendations to the whole assembly, who then make decisions that the government must respect. It’s important work.

BY THE NUMBERS

Food Insecurity

🧺 47.9%: Demand at the Upper Room Food Bank in Charlottetown has skyrocketed this summer. Volunteers with the Upper Room Hospitality Ministry served 815 households in June, compared to 551 households in June 2021. Over 2,000 Islanders each month have been relying on the food bank.

🍽️ 11.7%: This is the increase in meals served at the soup kitchen in Charlottetown. Volunteers with the Upper Room Hospitality Ministry served 3,774 meals last month, compared to 3,378 meals in July of 2021.

📈 11.7%: The price of food purchased from stores in July of this year also increased by 11.7 per cent year-over-year compared to July 2021. Food prices on PEI are outpacing overall inflation, which hit 9.5 per cent in July, down from 10.9 per cent in June.

🌀 2022 Hurricane Season Awakens

The 2022 hurricane season is well underway, but you wouldn’t be alone if it hasn’t been on your radar. There have only been three named storms so far this season. Not one has reached hurricane status. But all of that could change over the next day or two.

Meteorologists are monitoring several systems in the Atlantic, one of which is likely to become the forth named storm of the season, Danielle. If the system is not named before Sept 1, this year will be the third season on record without a named storm in August since 1960. The other two years were 1997 and 1961.

For comparison, by this time last year, the Atlantic had spawned 11 named storms, of which seven reached tropical storm status (62-117 km/h), and four became hurricanes (greater than 117 km/h). Hurricane Larry received its name on Sept 1, becoming the 12th named storm of the 2021 season. Larry went on to hit Newfoundland and Labrador, causing damage to buildings and leaving 60,000 without power.
