  ISLAND BRIEFS

  • The province reported a fish kill after 200 dead fish were discovered in the east branch of Morell River. Officials say multiple factors likely led to the kill. Oxygen levels in the water were found to be well below normal, which may have resulted from increased water temperatures. Officials continue to monitor and investigate the situation.
  • Efforts to put the MV Saaremaa to work between Wood Islands and Caribou continues. The vessel, which will fill in for the MV Holiday Island after that vessel was put out of service due to a fire last month, could be in service by the end of this week.

  • Confirmed cases of COVID-19 are down for the fourth week in a row. The province reported yesterday that over the last week 571 people have tested positive, the lowest number since late May. No new deaths were reported.

BY THE NUMBERS

📉 9.5% - The Island's inflation rate was down to 9.5 per cent in July from 10.9 per cent in June. But still, PEI continues to experience the highest rate of inflation in the country. Nationally, inflation hit 7.6 per cent in July, down from 8.1 per cent in June.

🐮 2.5% - Dairy prices are going up Sept. 1 by 2.5 per cent. This follows an 8.4 per cent increase earlier this year. Dairy prices in Canada are regulated, and are typically adjusted once annually. Dairy farmers called on the Canadian Dairy Commission to add the second increase, citing increased production costs.

🏡 25% - Housing prices on the Island are predicted to drop by 25 per cent by the end of next year, according to an updated outlook released by Desjardins last week. Even with this decrease, housing prices are expected to remain above pre-pandemic gains.

PUBLIC ART 🎨

Meet PEI's Tiniest (and super cute) Art Gallary

Island artists with big imaginations now have a tiny gallery to display their artwork on Fitzroy Street in Charlottetown.

Along the sidewalk between Felling and Edward streets sits a tiny art gallery, which had its tiny grand opening six weeks ago. Since opening, the Fitzroy Street Tiny Art Gallery has hosted three professionally curated exhibits featuring work by artists Renee Laprise, John Fox and Jill McRae.

Modelled after the success of tiny libraries, art galleries of tiny proportions have been popping up across North America.

Monica Lacey launched the project, which received $2,500 in support from the city’s micro grant program. Monica, who has worked professionally as a visual artist for the last decade, had to scale down her past experience in producing and curating art exhibits.

“The first two artists I featured, I knew they were working with smaller versions of large pieces, or working with prints of their work,” she said. “I knew they could scale down.”

The most recent exhibit (pictured above) was produced by artist Jill MacRae who specializes in cut paper work. Jill’s exhibit featured replica instruments used by Charlottetown folk-rock band Racoon Bandit.

“It was basically a Racoon Bandit rehearsal space,” Monica said.

The art gallery remains locked while a curated exhibit is on display, but right before exhibits are changed, the lock is removed and Monica announces on the gallery’s Instagram profile that the art is available to take.

One more curated exhibit, by artist Betty-Jo McCarville, will go on display today and will run until early September. After that, the art gallery will be unlocked and the public will be invited to put their own works of art on display.

“Take some art, leave some art," she said. "Hopefully it will evolve organically.”

The gallery will remain in place until the worst part of winter hits, at which time it’ll be put into storage until the spring.
