ISLAND BRIEFS | An advisory to stay out of the Charlottetown harbour has expired. The city issued the warning Monday following the release of 6,000 cubic metres of untreated waste into the harbour. For the first time since 2014, more than one person wants to be mayor of Cavendish. Councillor Bill Drost has announced his intention to run for the top job. Incumbent mayor Matthew Jelley announced last month he will reoffer. The campground at Green Park has reopened following significant damage caused by post-tropical storm Dorian in 2019.

DEVELOPMENT | Province looking to expand Hillsborough Park | | | | When you look at an aerial image of Hillsborough Park, a large parcel of undeveloped land along Wright's Creek stands out. The future of that parcel of land, which totals 85 acres, will be discussed during public information sessions next week.
The province has hired Dartmouth-based Fathom Studios to facilitate the information sessions and to design a concept plan for the land, which is owned by the province's housing corporation.
It's anticipated that the plan will include designating 30 acres of land under the Natural Areas Protection Act, and developing 55 acres into a mix of single-family and multi-family residential housing with parks and active transportation trails.
Information sessions will be held both in-person and online. Feedback will be accepted until September 6.
In-person: August 9 @ the Carrefour Centre (École François-Buote), 5 Acadian Drive / 6:30 PM (registration required) Online: August 10 via Zoom / 6:30 PM (registration required)

QUICK HITS | | Tent city: Charlottetown police are looking to Halifax for a possible solution on how to deal with so-called tent cities.
Jennifer McCarron, deputy police chief, responded to questions from members of the protective and emergency services committee last week about the issue. People living in tents around the city has been increasing, particularly behind the Christian Reformed Church on Mount Edward Road and near Maritime Electric on the waterfront.
Complaints have been received about garbage being left behind where people are camping, and police have recovered stolen property from these locations. In at least one case, council voted for public works to clean up a property at the expense of taxpayers.
McCarron said police here are talking with officials in Halifax to determine what options exist to handle the situation.
Side note: Halifax Police have been heavily criticized by some for how they have been handling the situation in their city. | | Pools should have fences: Hardtop swimming pool covers will likely not be replacing fences in Charlottetown anytime soon.
Two residents with pools and a business that installs motorized covers requested a bylaw change to allow covers to be used in place of an enclosure or fence, citing Alberta's provincial building code which allows this. Planning staff researched the issue and found that Prince Edward Island's provincial building code makes no recommendation for pool covers. The absence of a code review in this province would put the onus on city staff to ensure they were approving a suitable cover, and that doesn’t sit well with staff.
"This type of bylaw amendment has life-safety implications that need to be reviewed carefully by qualified professionals, and requires a provincial review," read a slide presented to the planning board.
The board agreed and voted to send the proposal to council with a recommendation to deny it. |
