True Crime podcast examines Byron Carr cold case

This is an archived Island Edition newsletter originally published on . Links were accurate at publication time and may no longer work.

Happy Wednesday! Consistency is key when starting something new, be it a new fitness program or an email newsletter. With that in mind, I am going to scrap the Friday issue (for now) to focus more of my attention on the Wednesday issue.

And with that out of the way, let's get to today's issue of Island Edition.

⌚Approximate reading time is 3 minutes.

  ISLAND BRIEFS

  • The province is seeing a surge in demand for COVID-19 booster shots. Islanders 12 and older are eligible to receive their fourth dose.
  • A group of paediatricians are speaking out against a proposed bylaw amendment in Charlottetown that would allow hard top pool covers to be used in place of an enclosure or fence.

QUICK HITS

Endurance: PEI triathlete Martin Sobey earned a silver medal Sunday at the Americas Triathlon Cup in Long Beach, Calif. Just one second behind the first place winner, Sobey finished the triathlon with a time of 52:02. Sobey will represent Canada later this month at the 2022 Commonwealth Games.

No-fly zone: RCMP arrested a 64-year-old man for discharging a firearm at a drone that was flying near his property in Cavendish last week. Police used footage from the drone as part of their investigation, and arrested the man without incident. He will answer to the charges in court on September 26.

New Sherwood Elementary: After being first announced in 2017, the province officially broke ground Monday on a replacement school for Sherwood Elementary. The new K-6 school, which is being built behind the existing school, will have space for 650 students, and will be net-zero-ready. The province expects the new school to be ready for the 2024-25 school year.

Quick note: I am waiting on an official "net-zero-ready" definition from the province in the context of this project. I'll pass the definition along when I get it back.

Help Wanted: After unsuccessful attempts to hire a dishwasher at The Inn at Bay Fortune, Chef Michael Smith upped the ante last week when he took to social media with an offer to fly a successful candidate to the Island from anywhere in Canada and hook them up with a place to stay. Smith told CTV News that he has since received over 100 applications for the job, which pays $18 an hour with full benefits.

WORTH A LISTEN

An Ontario podcaster, Robin Warder, recently examined the unsolved murder of Byron Carr on his true crime podcast, The Trail Went Cold. The episode provides no new details, but serves as a good summary of events and details that have previously been made public by police.

Warder has been producing his podcast since 2016, and recently completed a series that covered at least one cold case from each US state. He has now turned his focus on Canadian cold cases.

Carr was found dead in his Parkdale apartment in November 1988. His murder is the only cold case being investigated by Charlottetown police.
