PEI's population closing in on 170k 📈

  ISLAND BRIEFS 

• Health PEI is advising Islanders with "less than urgent" issues to avoid emergency departments this long weekend, citing an increase in COVID-19 cases and staff shortages as the cause for longer than usual wait times.
• The Cornwall and Area Watershed Group will be giving away free trees today from 11:30-2:30 at 413 Sleepy Hollow Road and at the Terry Fox Sports Complex in Cornwall. Up to five trees per household. Trees available include white spruce, red oak, red maple, and white pine.

HOUSING DEVELOPMENT

City considering another large housing development off Mount Edward Road

Charlottetown's planning board will take a look Monday at a large housing development being proposed for an 11-acre parcel of land between Canadian Tire and Mount Edward Road.

The proposed development contains five apartment buildings and four townhouse-style buildings. The apartment buildings would range in height from four to six floors, and would each have underground parking. In total, the plan contains 344 apartment units and 26 townhouse units.

There would be a single access point along Mount Edward Road for the entire development, but eventually access to the apartment buildings would be moved to the Spencer Drive extension. Access to the townhouses would remain on Mount Edward Road.

Planning staff are recommending that the project, which was submitted by RYCH Investments Inc., move to city council for a vote to send the development to public consultation.

This development would be in addition to the already approved Sherwood Crossing neighbourhood, which is currently under construction. The city this week also approved a 68-unit apartment building on the south side of Towers Road this week.
