CITY POLICE & FIRE UPDATES

Charlottetown's Protective & Emergency Services Committee held its regular monthly meeting Tuesday. Below is a recap of that meeting.

Police Response: Police responded to 1,617 calls during the month of May. The department continues to receive a large number of calls in and around the area of the Community Outreach Centre on Euston Street.

Fire Response: The fire department responded to 83 calls during the month of May. Station One responded to 52 of those calls; Station Two answered 27 calls; city fire inspectors were dispatched to four calls. Total time on-scene for the department was just under 41 hours.

New Staff: Three new police constables will soon be hitting the streets in Charlottetown. The fire department is in the process of filling several part-time (paid) positions, and will soon launch a competition to fill three new full-time firefighter positions that were announced in the city's 2022-23 operational budget.

Volunteer Firefighter Recruitment: The fire department is accepting applications for new volunteer firefighters earlier than usual this year. Volunteers are typically recruited over the fall season, but the department has bumped up the recruitment schedule to give time for candidates to train in-house before attending training at the provincial fire school over the winter months. The deadline to apply is August 12. Applications can be picked up at Station One (89 Kent Street).

QUICK HITS

Thank you for your service: The regimental funeral for Island EMS paramedic Annie MacPhee will be held today (June 29) at 11:00 at the Delta Prince Edward. MacPhee died in a car accident on June 18 while driving to work. She also served as a volunteer firefighter in Cardigan.

Downtown market: The Downtown Farmers' Market returns to Queen Street beginning July 3. The market will welcome 80 vendors this year, occuplying three city blocks. The market runs each Sunday, rain or shine, between 10AM and 3PM until September 25.

Waste to energy: The province is reviewing plans to build a new waste to energy plant on the Charlottetown waterfront. The new facility would be built on the opposite side of Riverside Drive from where the current plant is located.

Not so fast: Energy Minister Steven Myers told CBC that government is prepared to intervene and challenge a proposed increase to electricity rates of between 9-12 per cent. The privately-owned utility has also applied to increase the profits its shareholders are allowed to earn, from 9.35 per cent to 9.95 per cent annually.
