Long-promised relief payments out next month 💰

This is an archived Island Edition newsletter originally published on . Links were accurate at publication time and may no longer work.

Welcome to the first full day of summer! Reading over the rate increase application Maritime Electric filed with IRAC ate into the majority of time I reserved for writing this issue. There's a lot of information in there that is not being reported on to Islanders. If you're someone who professionally digests convoluted legal documents, I'd like your help breaking it down.

⌚Approximate reading time is 3 minutes.

  ISLAND BRIEFS

  • Abegweit First Nation Chief Junior Gould has called on the province to rename Savage Harbour.
  • A regimental funeral is being planned for Island EMS paramedic and volunteer firefighter Annie MacPhee, 52, who died in a vehicle collision on June 18 on her way to work.
  • PEI and Nova Scotia are leading the country with the highest rate of Cutaneous melanoma, which is caused by too much exposure to ultraviolet. On that note, the UV index today will reach 10 (very high).

QUICK HITS

City planning: Charlottetown is developing a new strategic plan to help guide the city over the next few years. The city has invited residents to take part in an online survey, which is available until Friday afternoon. There's also a public workshop being held tonight at 6:00 at Rodd Charlottetown.

Order in the Court: PEI has a new Supreme Court judge. Jonathan Coady has been appointed to the Supreme Court of Prince Edward Island. Coady fills a vacancy left after James Gormley was appointed chief justice of the Court of Appeal last month.

Nickel and Dimed: Cineplex has added a $1.50 booking fee to movie tickets bought online or via the company's app. The booking charge does not apply to tickets purchased in-person, and discounts are offered to loyalty plan members.

Park 'n Watch: Brackley Drive-In Theatre will be open seven days a week beginning this Friday. Top Gun: Maverick and Sonic 2 will be playing on screen 1; Lightyear and Bob's Burgers on screen 2. These movies will be playing until June 30.

BY THE NUMBERS

💰 $304K: Special Olympics PEI raised over $304,000 at its Enriching Lives Gala last night. The gala, which is the organization's signature fundraising event, was held at Delta Prince Edward.

📈 11.9%: Maritime Electric has applied to increase electrical rates. Under the proposal, first-block residential rates will increase by nearly 12 per cent over the next three years.
