ISLAND BRIEFS | - The UV Index for today is going to be very high (more on this below). Keep that in mind if you’re venturing outside.
The Charlottetown Islanders took Game 4 (7-0) in the President Cup final against the Shawinigan Cataractes, forcing Game 5, which will be in Charlottetown Saturday night. Gas and diesel are both up 5 cpl this morning. The maximum price for gas is now 219.9 cpl; maximum price for diesel is now 229.8 cpl. Cycling PEI members are relieved after Charlottetown police quickly recovered a stolen vehicle which contained expensive timing equipment used for cycling races. The equipment was intact.

QUICK HITS | | Shortage of LTC beds: PEI has a shortage of long term care beds, and the situation is declining. A report released by the Department of Health and Wellness says PEI will require a 35 per cent increase in beds (~300 beds) by 2025 at a cost of $134M to build, and $30M a year to operate. Islanders currently waiting for a long term care bed are occupying over 50 per cent of community hospital beds, and between 10-30 per cent of beds in the Queen Elizabeth and Prince County hospitals. Adding to the problem is an ongoing shortage of nursing staff. Best of luck to whoever is leading this file. | | Get ‘em while they’re hot: PEI’s National Park is now operating for the 2022 season, which (sadly) means there’s now an entrance fee to get in. You have until June 15 to purchase an “early bird” pass if you want to save twenty-to-thirty bucks. Passes can be purchased online or at Ardgowan National Historic Site (2 Palmers Lane, Charlottetown). | | Speaking of PEI’s National Park: Richard’s Fresh Seafood at Stanhope Wharf is now open for the season. Tell the employee at the park gate that you’re ‘heading to Richard’s’ and they’ll waive you in for free | | Quiet on the set: Charlottetown is the new Halifax, at least it will be in the fourth season of hit CBC legal drama Diggstown. The show began filming in Charlottetown last month, and crews will be here into August. The show will still be set in Halifax, but with the power of cinema, Charlottetown will set the stage for the majority of the season. |
